We're excited to introduce a quirky new feature to our PTE mock test platform: Background Noise Simulation. This addition addresses one of the most common concerns raised by PTE test-takers worldwide.
If you've taken the PTE Academic test before, you know the reality: the worst noise during the PTE exam would probably be caused during the speaking module of the PTE exam. Most of you will reach that part almost simultaneously, all while sharing the same space. Imagine the noise level when everyone starts speaking at the same time. Hoping that the computer can capture what is being said, some would try to speak louder over the others. It can be utter chaos.
Many test-takers report feeling unprepared for this challenging environment. As one test-taker shared, "The noise level was totally unacceptable and could definitely affect one's result. The worst was during speaking section where eight of us speak aloud simultaneously all at the same time."
Why background noise matters for your PTE Score
Research and test-taker experiences consistently show that when the surrounding environment is noisy or distracting, it can disrupt your concentration, leading to potential mistakes and lower scores. The impact is particularly significant during speaking tasks where clarity and pronunciation are crucial. If there is excessive noise around you, it can be challenging to enunciate words correctly and maintain a smooth speaking rhythm.
The new feature
Our new background noise simulation recreates the authentic test center environment during your mock test practice. With a simple click of the headphone icon, you can:
- Experience realistic test conditions with ambient speaking sounds from other test-takers
- Build concentration skills in a distracting environment
- Develop confidence to maintain your speaking rhythm despite background noise
- Practice focus techniques that transfer directly to test day
How it works
During any speaking section of your mock test, simply click the background noise icon to activate the simulation. The feature is designed to be:
- User-controlled: Turn it on or off as needed during your practice
- Realistic: Crafted to mirror actual test center conditions
- Non-intrusive: Balanced to challenge you without overwhelming your practice session
Expert-recommended preparation strategy
Leading PTE preparation experts consistently recommend that students practice in slightly noisy environments, such as a cafe or with background sound at home. This will help you stay focused and unaffected by distractions, maintaining your flow even in a busy setting.
Our background noise feature eliminates the need to find external noisy environments – you can now train for real test conditions from the comfort of your home.
Best practices for using this feature
- Start without noise to build confidence in your speaking responses
- Gradually introduce background noise as you become more comfortable
- Wear headphones when using this feature to prevent background noise from being captured by your microphone during recording
- Practice regularly with noise activated to build resilience
- Focus on your own voice and task rather than the distractions
This feature is now available across all of our mock test modules. Log in to learnpte.com to try it out!.
